EPW - Charles Goode, London, early quarter-hour repeating verge fusee, 56mm, silver-gilt (vermeil) OF original consular case pierced for sound transmission, no maker's mark or hallmarks evident under bell, decorative elements to pierced case areas include elaborate foliate scrolling and a swan, shuttered winding aperture to rear, later style white enamel dial and fancy gilt hands, KWKS, verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced and engraved foliate scrolled balance cock having seashell at its neck, no visible s#. Gross weight of assembled watch 105.5 dwt (164.1 g). An attractive pre-1730 English repeater, Charles Goode is listed in Brain Loomes' "Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World" as working as a member of Clockmakers Company in 1686 and as having died in 1730.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running in positions other than dial down but stopping abruptly when turned dial down, inconsistent repeat function with occasional correct strikes intermixed with strikings in error following no discernible pattern, good repeat tone apart from occasional light muffling caused by contact of loose button latch, overhaul needed, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, mvt with significant rotational play at hinge, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, small notation scribed on plate surface above "London," dial with two fractures and small flake at 6, some scattered short scratches, some small flakes at center; fine hands, minute with small soldered repair at center; case shows light wear, mild dent among pierced detail at right perimeter of rear, mild portions of gilt loss, button latch broken; gilt bow pivots semi-freely and has some finish loss; good domed glass crystal.
